Sites like Google.com and Facebook.com are excellent domain names.  These websites and other in its ranks have one thing in common, good domain names. To coin a good domain name, these days, is not an easy task. No good domain names are available. So how does one set out on a safe voyage in search of a good domain name?  Why is a good domain name important? What are the things to consider when choosing a domain name?

Imagine what will happen to a company that decides to change its name to ‘unreliable.’ This name would not only question the firm’s credibility but also ruin its chances of competing. For instance, Oil-field-services.com is a bad domain name for a reputable oil servicing company in today’s competitive world of business. An ill-conceived domain name places a project in bad light. In order words, such domain name lacks credibility and good brand considerations.

However, visitors to internet sites don’t just come from search engines alone. People recommend domain names to their family members and contacts as well. Someone may decide to tell how useful your site was in helping him solve a problem at a forum. With this in mind, it is important to make your domain name easy to remember. I recommend using the ‘KISS ‘formula: Keep it simple and short. A simple domain name makes it easy for someone to pass on.

To help you come up with a good domain name, follow a domain name branding strategy that is well known and tweak it a little. Google.com, to me, means using goggles to search for information, and truly, this is what the company does. To come up with your own search engine domain name, for example, do consider something related to the word ‘search’ and make it unique.

Exact match domain name is relative. Brand names such as Facebook.com and Google.com fit in well in this description.  Exact match domain names have higher advantage when it comes to PPC.  As you may already know, with links that matches the key – phrase people are searching for; you may not have to bid for traffic because people like to click on such links.

Nevertheless, it’s easier and cheaper to dominate both organic and PPC listings. All you have to do is build a brand to become a searchable phrase. Good domain name considerations will easily take you there. It’s almost not feasible to achieve this feat with a domain name like seo-search-online.com or sort.

However, it’s important to have a keyword in URL, though this may not help make the brand memorable and distinctive. One way to avoid this is the use of byline that will surely become an integral part of your brand. For example, you may want to add a phrase that describes what you do to your domain name. If your domain name is tohm.com, you may add a byline such as tohm.com—oil servicing to let the customers know immediately what your business is all about.
