Linkbaiting The Right Way
Presented to you by LetsTalkSEO.com © 2010
Linkbaiting is one good technique for website owners to attract visitors to his website. Good content posted on a website or a blog means nothing when no one actually sees it. It can be a very good article on its subject but the real question is whether anyone will actually see it.
What is linkbaiting?
Linkbaiting is defined as attractive, useful, entertaining, humorous, and informative content in a website that attracts links. This method is akin to fishing. By leaving a bait in the water, the fisherman can just sit and pass the time waiting for a fish to nibble or bite on the bait. When a fish does bite on the bait, he can then pull it in. This is similar to linkbaiting. A link can be left in the internet where it can attract visitors with an eye-grabbing phrase which serves as the bait. If someone clicks on the link, he will be redirected to the website.
How to implement linkbaiting?
The best technique to implement linkbaiting is through social media websites. This technique is also called social bookmarking. Contrary to what is commonly believed, it is acceptable to bookmark one’s own website. Once the information about the site has been written, anybody can then bookmark their sites to social networking websites. This starts the linkbaiting process.
A hook can be of different types when deciding on what the title of bookmark should be and what the website’s description should be.
An Ego hook is a hook that aimed at written positive content about certain people. This in turn will make them vote the website up.
A Humor hook will always attract people and clicks. Humor hooks are funny and are always clicked by people.
A Contrary hook displays an opposite view of the subject in mind. For instance, one can own an organic food website and post an article from someone claiming that organic food is unhealthy while posting some points about how he opposes the thoughts on the article.
A Resource hook is akin to a How-To content. People always want to have new information known everyday.
A News hook features news stories. This is the reason why Digg and similar sites were popular before. Anyone can digg a story first and have the story dugg by different people. If it goes to the front page of Digg, an insane amount of traffic can be generated.
These are some examples of hooks. However, hooks should always have true content and should not mislead people. Failure to do so will lead to the banning of the account of whoever posted the misleading link.
Although linkbaiting can help in Search Engine Optimization purposes, it is not really used much by certain people. It is used mainly because they want traffic generated to the website for anything, regardless of whatever it is about. The Search Engine Optimization process should be commenced as a different campaign. If the website owner intends to use linkbaiting, he has to place a good call to action for visitors of his website so that he won’t waste the traffic to his website for nothing in return.
