Optimize Your Site For Bing

Ever since its inception, the Bing Search Engine by Microsoft has grabbed plenty of attention from the SEO community. This of course, is quite natural given its hype as a formidable player that has the potential to compete with Google. But, it is also not the only one that has come to the fore. So, the expectation that it will greatly affect the monopoly of Google may be unfounded. But Bing is different from most other search engines in a positive way, which is its major plus point.
How different is Bing?
Its cute background undoubtedly creates a first impression and any misgivings you have about irrelevant search algorithms being camouflaged by graphical frills goes away when you are promptly led to different relevant search results.
But these relevant search results put the SEO experts in a fix. Even though they are relevant; the results differs from that presented by Google. That is, even if you get relevant search results, whether you use Bing or Google, yet when you compare the two sets, they are different.
The algorithm of Bing is one of the facts that have drawn the attention of SEO experts. The difference in search results is undoubtedly due to the difference in the algorithms of Google and Bing. So, a natural corollary to this is the question, whether the difference is so drastic to warrant the re-optimization of a site for Bing.
How to optimize your site for Bing?
Wait. Although this is the obvious thing to do, it is still premature to evaluate the steps necessary to achieve this.
That apart, despite the potential growth of Bing, it has still not yet established itself as a viable alternative to Google. Or whether it will be one of the many of the ineffectual attempts by another Search Engine to take its place? Gauge the response of the users – whether they get attracted to it fast or continue to use Google. After you get the clear picture, you may think of optimizing. Till then wait and watch.
What are the things that responsible for ranking a site high with Bing?
As expected, the detailed algorithm of Bing is yet to be available. Hence, speculation is rife as to what constitute the factors that makes it rank high with Bing as compared to Google. SEO experts are trying to delineate the SEO tactics that might work after analyzing the results of different search queries. And the results turn out to be quite interesting.
Some SEO experts believe Bing to be like Live Search but there are marked differences between them, as pointed out by many others. But they all admit that Bing is ahead of Live Search, as far as relevant search results are concerned.
SEO experts differ about the intricacies of algorithms and naturally they disagree about Bing as well. But the following factors are believed to hold the key regarding Bing optimization.
Back links are no longer that important – A comparison between 10 search results of Bing and Google point that the sites of Bing have less backlinks compared to that of Google’s. The relevance of no-follow with Bing is still unclear.
Inbound anchor text is important – The volume and type of inbound links have little bearing on the Bing. But the anchor text is important for Bing. But as the anchor text also reflect the quality of inbound links, using good anchor text would be effective both in case of Google and Bing.
Link spamming would hardly help in Bing – Link spamming is less fruitful in Bing as the quantity of backlinks, even they are of high quality, is of not much relevance compared to Google.
Onpage factors are more important than Google – There is a growing belief that onpage factors are more important in case of Bing. This forms the most controversial point and many SEO experts disagree to this view.
Bing takes into account the authority of the site – In case this one turns out to be true, the search engine is heavily loaded in favor of older sites and/or sites of authoritative organizations and hence blogging and other small sites would have less visible presence on the net.
PR doesn’t have much value – You would find some PR2 or PR1 sites among the top 10 results, while searching through competitive keywords in Bing. This is not normal in case of Google.
Fresh content is of not importance – It appears that fresh content is not very crucial in Bing as compared to Google. This could be due to the fact that it might be having difficulty in indexing all the sites quickly. Bing gives greater stress to the age of the domain specific and line ups relevant yet ancient pages.
Bing is more Flash-friendly – The optimization of a Flash site for Google is a difficult task. It appears that for Bing is far more flash-friendly. This is good news for the sites where Flash has been employed.
It is still unclear what factors are most relevant with Bing. But one thing is clear that their algorithm is precise, as the relevance of the search results show. One of the factors, responsible for the relevant search results, may be that web masters are yet to come up with SEO tactics for optimization. Hence, the content seems to be authentic. So, whether the search results will remain relevant or not will be known only after webmasters develop them to optimize Bing.
