YouTube has climbed the charts to be one of the most popular sites on the internet. Millions of people visit YouTube everyday, which makes it ideal for promotion of your website and getting traffic. However, in order to successfully use YouTube for promotion and getting traffic, you need to know certain rules.

Here are some tips and hints to promote your website and products and get traffic from YouTube:

1. Post viral videos
YouTube is flooding with videos. Posting more videos in which nobody is interested will not be of much use. The video will go unnoticed and will get lost in the jungle of videos, without giving you any traffic. The secret of getting traffic from YouTube is by posting useful videos or even better, viral videos. Viral videos spread like a virus and are promoted by people themselves. After that you just have to wait and watch the traffic flow in.

2. Create an interesting profile
Just like any other social networking site such as Twitter or Facebook, you can create your own profile on YouTube too. Keep your profile interesting and neat as people will visit it if they like your videos. Try not sounding too stern and professional in your profile. Make it a bit informal but do maintain your composure. If people like your profile, they will keep visiting and promoting your videos.

3. Include your logo and website in the video
You can insert your website logo inside your videos to make your brand popular. It is best if you can insert the URL and the logo as a watermark throughout the video. However, if you can’t insert a watermark in the video, you can always insert them in the beginning or at the end of the video.

4. Post quality videos
As mentioned earlier, YouTube is flooding with videos of all possible categories. Poor quality videos often go unnoticed and are not favored by viewers. So make sure that your videos have high quality audio and video. Blurred and snowy videos will not get you any traffic and might even spoil your popularity over YouTube. Your videos don’t have to be all professional, you can even post amateur videos as long as they are of decent quality.

5. Promote your videos
Even if your videos get viral, you still need to promote them. You cannot simply rely on your luck to get viewers for your video. Even the viral videos need promotion and will benefit from it. You can promote the video on various forums, blogs or social networking sites such as Twitter or Facebook.

6. Make your videos search-friendly
Most of the traffic you get on your video, will be through search- both on YouTube and on search engines. So you need to make your videos search friendly by including major keywords in the title of the video and its description. Also make good use of tags and include all possible relevant keywords in them. Be careful about not using irrelevant keywords or it will be considered as spam.

7. Post in series
Post videos at regular intervals on YouTube as a series. Upload a new video every week/month which maybe the sequel of the previous one. Even if the new video is not related to the previous one, do post a fresh video. This will keep the viewers keen to come back regularly to check out the new stuff and will help build a loyal regular audience.

8. Post video responses
Video responses to other videos can be used to popularize your video. Search the most popular videos in your niche and post responses to them. Just make sure that your response is related to the video and is not just blatant self promotion or spam. You can even post responses on videos on the same niche on other popular sites and place your video URL in the response, if allowed.

9. Choose the right time to post your videos
Choosing the right time to post your video on YouTube is vital. Timing is important as you would want to post your video during the peak hours of traffic. Weekday morning or early afternoon US time is the best time to post a general interest video. To upload your video during prime time, you need to plan a bit. Have in mind that for large videos and/or slow Internet connections the upload could take you an hour, so start early.

10. Keep your videos short
Although YouTube allows uploading long videos, that is not a very good idea. Long videos get very boring and chances are people will not watch your video till the end. 3 to 5 minutes is the ideal length for videos but if required they may go as long as 5 to 6 minutes. Long videos will only bring harm as viewers won’t watch it till the end, where your website URL and logo are to be found. So keep your videos short, give some details in the description and tell viewers to visit your website for more.

11. Comment on other people’s videos and include a link to your site in your comment
In addition to video responses, you can comment on the popular videos in your niche. Search for such videos and post comments. If your comment is liked by viewers, chances are they will visit your profile and watch your videos.

YouTube is a valuable resource to get traffic to your website. The competition there maybe cut throat, but good videos never go unnoticed. You will always reap results with good videos. So do it now, before your competitors do.
